Ramadan is the month of giving, and this year To Sudan With Love shared love and essential Ramadan food items with more than 900 needy families in several areas in the triangular capital of Khartoum.
Our initial target was to distribute Ramadan hampers to help 300-500 families in the rural areas and slums of Khartoum. However, thanks to the generosity of group members who donated money from all around the world, in addition to members from Sudan who donated money, food items and credit, we were able to raise approximately USD $11,200 in donations over a period of 4 weeks.
This incredible funding enabled us to organize two successful distributions separately. The first event took place on Friday and Saturday 5th and 6th of Ramadan respectively. With the help of around 20 volunteers who gathered at the Sea Scouts Club on both days, 330 Ramadan hampers were packaged- with each hamper including the following items:
1 kg of sugar, 1 kg of flour, 1 litre of oil, a bag of dates, a bag of onions, a packet of powdered milk and a packet of tea.
These hampers were distributed in 3 different locations in Umdurman and 3 different locations in Khartoum North (Bahri), all of which are poor neighborhoods with dozens of families. Around 50 hampers were still left by the end of the day, and they were distributed in Al Samrab neighborhood in Khartoum the following day.
The second event was hosted at the usual meet up point – the Sea Scouts Club in Nile street on Friday and Saturday 19th and 20th of Ramadan respectively. Over 20 volunteers attended on Friday to help with the packaging of 600 hampers which included sugar, flour, tea, hibiscus, onions and weika.
On Saturday, all 600 hampers were distributed with the help of Khartoum Police in the slums area between Mayo and Al-Salama. Below are a few of many photos of the beautiful children we were blessed to meet in the area:

The To Sudan With Love team is overwhelmed by the generosity of the donors who made it possible for us to support over 900 families in the slums of Khartoum, and is grateful for all the volunteers who came out to help in the middle of sweltering Ramadan days and put their elbow grease into this project. May Allah bless them all and reward them with endless hasanat. Last but not least, we can’t forget all the members who contributed to the success of our Ramadan 2011 project with their donations, support and words of encouragement.
